How to Optimize Your Current Listings for More Sales

When sales slow down, it’s easy to assume you need more inventory. In reality, one of the most effective ways to increase sales is to optimize the listings you already have. Small improvements to photos, details, and pricing can make a huge difference in visibility and buyer confidence.

If an item has been sitting for months—or even over a year—this is your sign to refresh it.

Start With Your Photos: They Matter More Than You Think

Photos are the first thing a buyer sees, and often the reason they click—or scroll past.

To improve your photos:

  • Use bright, natural light whenever possible

  • Avoid harsh shadows or yellow indoor lighting

  • Make sure photos are clear and not blurry

  • Use a clean, simple background

  • Lead with your strongest image as the cover photo

If a listing has dark or grainy photos, retaking even one or two images can dramatically improve performance.

Great Photos = Trust

Buyers want to feel confident before purchasing. Quality photos signal professionalism and honesty.

Be sure to include:

  • Front and back of the item

  • Close-ups of fabric texture

  • Any flaws or wear (clearly shown)

  • Tags, logos, and branding

Blurry or low-quality images often raise red flags and can prevent buyers from clicking “buy,” even if the item itself is great.

Add Measurements (Always)

Measurements reduce returns and increase buyer confidence—especially for secondhand items.

At a minimum, I include:

  • Tops- Pit to pit, Length, Hem, Sleeve

  • Bottoms- Waist, Inseam, Outseam, Rise, Sweep

Even if a brand runs “true to size,” fit varies over time and between styles. Listings with measurements consistently outperform those without.

Photograph Fabric and Care Tags

Fabric content matters more than many sellers realize.

Buyers actively search for materials like:

  • Cotton

  • Linen

  • Wool

  • Cashmere

  • Silk

Make sure fabric and care tags are:

  • Clearly photographed

  • Mentioned in the description

  • Accurate and easy to find

If there’s no fabric tag, note that in the listing and describe the feel and weight as best you can.

Review Anything Listed Over a Year Ago

Any item that’s been listed for over a year deserves a second look.

For older listings:

  • Recheck sold comps on the platform

  • Adjust pricing to match today’s market

  • Consider whether seasonality affected demand

  • Decide if it needs new photos, a relist, or a price change

Markets shift constantly—what was priced correctly a year ago may now be overpriced or undervalued.

Clean Up Titles and Descriptions

While photos get the click, clear titles and descriptions close the sale.

Make sure your listing includes:

  • Accurate brand and item name

  • Material and fit details

  • Condition notes

  • Measurements and care info

Avoid vague language and focus on clarity. Buyers should never have to guess.

When to Relist vs. Update

  • Update listings that have decent photos but need better details or pricing

  • Relist items with poor photos, outdated pricing, or zero engagement

Relisting gives items a fresh boost in search results, especially on platforms like Poshmark.

Optimizing your current listings is one of the highest-impact actions you can take as a reseller. Bright, high-quality photos, clear measurements, visible fabric tags, and up-to-date pricing build trust—and trust leads to sales.

Before sourcing more, take the time to refresh what you already have. Your inventory may be closer to selling than you think.
